SYNOPSIS

WEIMAR tells the story of the Weimar Republic. At its centre is a historical figure who - unlike any other - influenced the destiny of Germany’s first democracy from beginning to end: General Kurt von Schleicher.

Starting out as a talented military man in the crisis-ridden days after WW1, Schleicher quickly rises to the upper echelons of the Republic’s political class, becoming the powerful right hand of Germany’s ageing President Hindenburg. Schleicher’s subtle but important influence on major political decisions – including overthrowing several Chancellors as well as undermining the Constitution in order to circumvent a dysfunctional Parliament – culminates in his becoming the last Chancellor before Hitler. The last man standing. Desperately trying – and nearly succeeding – to prevent the Nazi takeover.

Schleicher’s ever-growing hubris as well as his forbidden love for his sister-in-law Elisabeth, his most trusted political consultant and the co-lead of the series, finally seal his fate. In his tragic failure, Schleicher takes the Weimar Republic down with him and hurls the whole world into the biggest catastrophe of recent human history.
